Sussex County Delaware Schedules Conference to Address Affordable Housing
Issues with “affordable housing” in Sussex county will be addressed at the annual Sussex County Today and Tomorrow Conference, Wednesday October 31st at the Delaware Technical & Community College.
While Sussex County Delaware has remained the fastest growing county in the state, wages and benefits have lagged far behind this growth. This is making it very hard median income borrowers to purchase an average home. The median home price in Sussex County ranking in at $250,000 the average income is only $55,000. Realistically a person making only $55,000 can only afford a home worth $165,000. This slow increase in wages needs to be addressed at the meeting because the median income in 2000 was $50,000 so there has only been a $5,000 increase in the last 7 years.
This high housing cost in certain areas is making it hard for many median income employers. Hospital officials at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes Delaware say that the higher cost of homes in their area is hampering their recruitment efforts from technicians, to nurses, and even doctors.
